Why are Instagram stories not loading?

Published · Jennifer Skinner

Whose problem is it: your app, the poster or Instagram

A story that spins and never opens looks the same whatever the cause, so the first job is to work out where the problem lies. There are three places it can be, and each leaves a different pattern. Everything this page says about how Instagram behaves was checked on 24 September 2026 in the Instagram apps for iOS and Android, on personal accounts, unless a line says otherwise.

What you noticeMost likely sourceWhat to do

The last row is the easiest to miss. A story stays on the profile for 24 hours from posting and then leaves it. A ring that was there last night may simply be gone; how that clock works is explained in Can you see who viewed your Instagram story? An expired story is not broken. It sits in the poster’s archive, and only the poster can show it again, by pinning it to a highlight, where it appears in the highlights row rather than in the ring.

Reinstalling cannot help with an expired or hidden story, which is why the table comes before any fix. Find the row that matches, then go to the section for it.

What people usually try on their own phone

When an IG story is not loading for you but works for the people around you, the problem is local. The advice search results give, as summarised in a search overview from September 2026, runs from the cheapest step to the most drastic:

  • Close the app fully and open it again. Swipe it away from the recent apps list rather than switching to another app.
  • Change the connection. Move between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or turn airplane mode on and off to reset the network.
  • Update the app. Install the latest version from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Clear the cache or reinstall. Android lets you clear the app’s cache in the phone’s settings; on an iPhone the equivalent is deleting and reinstalling the app.

This is common advice, not a guaranteed repair, and none of it helps when the story itself is gone or was never shown to you. Instagram keeps its own page for when something is not working in the app, which is the place to go next if none of this changes anything.

What if only one account’s story will not load?

If every other story plays and one account stays silent, the cause almost always lies with that account. There are five possibilities, and they lead to different conclusions:

  • The story has expired. The 24 hours have run out, and the ring has gone with them.
  • The story is hidden from you. An account can keep its stories from particular people, and the person left out is not told.
  • The story went to close friends only. Instagram lets people share a story with a close friends list only; if you are not on that list, the story does not reach you.
  • The account is private. A private account’s stories open for the followers it has approved and nobody else. A profile that shows a picture and counts but no posts is private; what can and cannot be done about that is covered in Can you view a private Instagram account?
  • You have been blocked. Here the whole profile becomes unavailable to you, not only the stories, and no single sign proves it. How to tell a block from a deleted or renamed account is set out in How to know if someone blocked you on Instagram.

A missing story on its own does not mean a block. Before concluding that, look at the other signs described in the block guide.

Checking the story from outside your app

The fastest way to separate “the story is not there” from “the story is not reaching me” is to open the same public account without your own account. GazeStory opens whatever a public account has live right now, along with its highlights and recent posts, inside the browser. Nothing asks you to sign in, and your account is not used. You can check a public account’s stories from outside the app by pasting the username into the box on the homepage.

Each result points one way:

  • The stories play there but not in your app. The story exists. It is hidden from you, you have been blocked (in which case the whole profile is unavailable in your app), or your app is at fault; if other accounts’ stories also fail for you, it is the app.
  • The page says there are no active stories. No public story is live on that account right now, and a close friends story would not show here either, so nothing needs fixing on your phone.
  • The page cannot open the profile. Most often the account is private; now and then a public account gives the same result. The outside check cannot help here.
  • The lookup fails with a short countdown and a Retry button. The lookup did not go through at that moment, so the result tells you nothing about the account. How this site handles lookups is explained in Is GazeStory safe to use? Other web viewers fail in their own ways, and Can you still use Picuki today? compares how several of them behaved on one day.

A signed-out browser is no substitute for this check. Instagram’s website shows a signed-out visitor a public profile’s header and a first batch of posts, then a prompt to see more, but stories ask for a login (checked 24 September 2026 in desktop Chrome). So a browser cannot tell you whether a story is live. Someone else’s account can also answer it, if the account is public or your friend is an approved follower.

The check has clear limits. It does not open private accounts, close friends stories or a story whose day is already over, so in those cases it cannot explain why the story is missing.

Telling an Instagram-wide fault apart

A fault at Instagram’s end tends to show itself in several places at once. Stories fail for every account rather than one, the feed or messages misbehave as well, and friends on other phones and networks report the same thing at the same time. Public outage trackers, which collect reports from users, usually show a spike when that happens, and one of the top search results for this problem in September 2026 was such a tracker.

When the signs line up like that, the app fixes above waste time. Reinstalling cannot repair a fault on Instagram’s side. Once the service recovers, the story should load, as long as it has not expired in the meantime. The only useful step is to check again later.

A countdown on a lookup here is a separate matter and says nothing about whether Instagram is having problems.

Questions people also ask

Is there a problem with Instagram stories today?

Check whether it affects every account or only one. A story glitch today that hits every account for you and your friends alike points to Instagram, and waiting is the only fix. If one account is silent, its story may simply have expired.

How do you fix the glitch on Instagram stories?

First make sure it is a glitch: a story that expired or is hidden from you cannot be fixed. If every story fails, close and reopen the app, change the connection, update the app, then clear the cache or reinstall.

Why is my Instagram story stuck on loading?

When every story hangs, the usual cause is the app or the connection, so closing the app fully and switching networks come first. If only one account hangs, check it from outside your app. A story of your own stuck while posting is a different problem, for Instagram’s help pages.

Why are people’s stories not showing on Instagram?

Every story drops off the profile a day after it was posted, and an account can also keep its stories from particular people, who are not told. Private accounts, close friends lists and blocks are the other reasons.

Why can’t I view someone’s story on Instagram?

If their profile opens but the story does not, it may be hidden from you, shared with close friends only, or expired. If the whole profile is unavailable, look at the other signs of a block before concluding anything.
