Can you view a private Instagram account?

What a private profile shows from outside

Making an account private is its owner’s decision. Posts and stories then go only to the followers they approve. Everything this page says about how Instagram behaves was checked on 24 September 2026 in the Instagram apps for iOS and Android, on personal accounts, unless a line says otherwise.

Someone who is signed in to Instagram but does not follow the account still sees part of the profile:

Part of the profileVisible to a non-follower?
Profile pictureYes
BioYes
Counts of posts, followers and followingYes
Posts and reelsNo
Stories and highlightsNo
Who follows the account, and whom it followsNo

The counts are only numbers. A follower count of 300 does not say who those 300 people are.

That visible top part, the profile’s header, is also how you can tell a private account from a block. A private profile still opens and shows its picture, bio and counts, while a block makes the whole profile unavailable to you. If what you see is “User not found” or a page that is not available, How to know if someone blocked you on Instagram explains how to tell the causes apart.

Through this site, a private profile shows even less. The page cannot open it and says so. Most often that means the account is private, but the notice occasionally shows for a public account too. No picture, bio or counts are shown here in that case, and nothing behind them. If the header opens for you in the app but not here, the account is most likely private rather than gone.

The only route in: a follow request

There is one way to see a private Instagram account’s posts and stories, and it is the one Instagram offers. Send a follow request and wait for the owner to approve it. Until they do, nothing behind the header opens; once they do, you see what every other follower sees. If they decline, or never answer, that is the end of it. One person whose request was declined put it plainly on Reddit: to the owner they were basically a stranger.

A second account is not a way around this. It is one more follow request, and the same owner decides on it. People on Reddit who tried report that such requests are usually not approved.

Approval is also not the last word. Even after it, an owner can hide their stories from particular followers, and the follower is not told.

How private viewer scams work

Search for a way into a private account and the results fill with sites that promise one. None of them can deliver it. What a private account posts goes only to the people its owner let in, and a website that was never let in has nothing to fetch and nothing to hand over. What these services do instead follows a small number of patterns, which people who paid for them described on Reddit between 2022 and 2026. The sites are left unnamed here, since they come and go under new names while the tactics stay the same.

  • Pay first, results “later”. The site takes payment for access and then quotes a long processing time before anything will be “ready”. One person described an estimate of three weeks alongside terms that ruled out a refund after two. So by the time the wait is over, the window for a refund has already closed.
  • A subscription that does not deliver. One person on a monthly plan said that after 11 days they had had no more than 30 hours of access; another said a month passed with nothing at all.
  • An attempt to take more than you agreed to. One person who had authorised a $12.99 payment described the site then trying to take $140.
  • Games and offers instead of a price. “Free” versions ask you to install apps or reach a level in a mobile game before anything happens, and nothing ever does.
  • The same example accounts on different sites. People describe finding the same sample profiles “unlocked” on the front pages of different sites. Seeing the same examples twice is a strong sign that neither site works.

Some of these sites also ask for your own Instagram login, or push you to download a file. If a site asks for either, close it. The first can cost you your account, and the second can put unwanted software on your device. What this site does and does not ask for is covered in Is GazeStory safe to use?

If you have already paid, a few practical steps limit the damage. Cancel any subscription from the account settings of the site or your app store, so it cannot renew. Ask your bank or card provider about disputing the charge, especially if more was taken than you agreed to. If you typed your Instagram password anywhere on such a site, change it at once and turn on two-factor authentication in Instagram’s settings. Waiting for the promised access only uses up whatever refund window there was.

What can you see on a public account?

If the account you are interested in is public, none of the above applies, because its posts and stories are there for anyone. GazeStory opens the current stories, highlights and recent posts of a public account in the browser. You never sign in, and no Instagram account of yours is involved. To open a public account without signing in, type its username on the homepage. If that account later switches to private, the route closes with it: from then on it gets the same notice as any other private profile, and earlier posts are no longer reachable here either.

It never asks for an Instagram password, and the next section lists what stays closed here even on public accounts. What reaches the account owner when you watch a story, signed in or not, is covered in Can you see who viewed your Instagram story? How much a profile visit gives away is in Does Instagram show who views your profile? Whether looking at a public profile is legal in the first place is a separate question, taken up in Is it legal to view Instagram stories anonymously?

What this site does not open on any account

A few things stay closed here whether an account is public or private:

  • Followers and following lists of a private account. On a public account, the first part of each list opens from the counts; on a private one, neither list opens.
  • Who liked a post. The like count is shown, the names behind it are not, for any post.
  • Close friends stories. They are not shown here, for any account.
  • Anything deleted or expired. A removed post is gone, and a story is off the profile once its 24 hours are up; it stays visible only if the owner adds it to a highlight.

Instagram’s own page on making an account private describes the setting from the owner’s side, for anyone who wants to see how it works from there.

Questions people also ask

How do I view a locked profile in Instagram?

Send a follow request and wait for approval. Until then you see only the picture, bio and counts. No website or app shows the rest, and any that claims to cannot deliver it.

Can I watch my Instagram private account followers for free?

If the account is yours, your followers list is in the Instagram app as usual. For someone else’s private account, no: the list is shown only to the owner and the followers they have approved. Here a follower list opens only on a public profile, and only its first names.

Is there a way to view someone’s Instagram story privately?

Not if their account is private: those stories open for nobody but the followers the owner accepted. On a public account, this site plays the stories in your browser without your account being used.

Can someone see that I viewed their Instagram story if I’m private?

Yes. Your own privacy setting does not hide your views. Each story view is logged under whichever account opened it, and the poster sees that account on the viewer list, as Can you see who viewed your Instagram story? explains.

Is there a way to see a private Instagram’s following?

No. In the Instagram app the count shows on the profile but the names do not, and nothing else shows them either. This site shows neither.
