Does Instagram notify when you screenshot?

Screenshots of stories, posts and DMs: who gets told

Can people see if you screenshot their Instagram story? No, and the same goes for most of the app: whether a screenshot is reported depends on what is on the screen. The exception is the disappearing messages in chats. Everything this page says about how Instagram behaves was checked on 24 September 2026 in the Instagram apps for iOS and Android, without Instagram Plus, unless a line says otherwise.

What you captureDoes anyone get told?
Someone else’s storyNo
Someone else’s story, screen-recordedNo
A post, a carousel or a reel in the feedNo
A profile pageNo
An ordinary chat messageNo
A disappearing photo or video sent in a chat (“View once” or “Allow replay”)Yes, the sender is told
A message in vanish modeYes, the sender is told
A clip inside a highlightNot checked separately (highlights are saved stories)

The dividing line is the chat’s own disappearing features. A photo or video sent to be seen once, or sent with replay allowed, is meant not to last, and messages in vanish mode work the same way. A screenshot of any of them is reported to whoever sent it. The sender, not you, chooses whether a photo goes out as view once, allow replay or in vanish mode, so the rule follows how it was sent. Stories, posts, reels, profiles and ordinary chats can be screenshotted without anyone being told. This page does not describe ways around the chat alert.

Posts claiming that screenshot alerts have “rolled out” for stories circulate anyway, including one hosted on instagram.com that turned up in search results in September 2026. No alert appeared in the check for this page. In January 2026 one Reddit user wrote that a poster had told them Instagram flagged their screenshot of the poster’s story; other comments in that thread said such notices are for DMs, and one guessed it “must’ve been in vanishing mode”.

A screenshot is also a separate question from being seen. Watching a story while signed in puts your name on its viewer list whether or not you capture it, as Can you see who viewed your Instagram story? explains and as Instagram’s own help page Who can tell that you’ve seen their Instagram story confirms. Opening a highlight clip lists you only while the original story is inside its first 24 hours, which Can you see who views your Instagram highlights? sets out.

If you have already taken a screenshot, the table is the answer. The screenshot of a story, post, reel or profile is not reported to the other person (checked 24 September 2026, without Instagram Plus). A screenshot of a disappearing message has already been shown to the sender.

Instagram Plus and the screenshot alert claim

The one open dispute is about Instagram Plus, a paid subscription that articles from May 2026 reported to be in testing. In a Reddit thread from September 2026, one user said it lets a poster see when someone screenshots a story; another, who said they had the subscription, reported no such notice.

None of the accounts checked for this page had Instagram Plus, so the claim could not be tried. Nothing official about such a feature appears in the sources used here. Everything in the table above was checked without Plus. If a poster subscribes to Plus, their side of the picture is unknown here, and a flat “yes” or “no” about it would be a guess.

If you are the one posting, the same silence works against you. On an account without Instagram Plus, anyone who can see a story can keep a copy of it without you knowing, so the only real control is who can see it. An account can hide its stories from particular people, and they are not told; Why are Instagram stories not loading? covers what that looks like from the other side. A private account limits stories to approved followers, which narrows the audience but does not stop any of them from keeping a copy. A disappearing photo or video, or a message in vanish mode, is the only kind that reports a screenshot, and even then the notice arrives only once the copy exists.

Screen recording a story

People who hear that screenshots are silent often ask about recording the screen instead. It makes no difference: recording someone’s story with the phone’s screen recorder did not notify the poster (checked 24 September 2026, without Instagram Plus). The chat exception still stands for screenshots of disappearing photos, videos and vanish-mode messages, and this page does not cover recording them.

Recording shares one catch with a screenshot: the story still has to be opened, and opening it while signed in lists you as a viewer. A recording made that way protects nothing that the viewing itself has already given away.

Saving a story in a browser instead

A public story can also be kept as a file, with no screen capture involved and without the app’s buttons and captions around it. GazeStory opens the stories, highlights and recent posts of a public account in the browser, and your Instagram account is not used for the view. Every item comes with a download button. Photos usually save as JPEG, sometimes WebP, and videos as MP4 with sound when the clip has it, in whatever size the source provides (checked 24 September 2026). The file is the story as it was posted, without the app’s interface on top, and it opens later like any other photo or video on your device. To save a public story as a file instead, paste the username into the box on the homepage.

This route covers public stories, highlights and posts only. It does not open private accounts, and it never touches chats, so disappearing messages and vanish mode are outside it. Your own account stays out of it. The poster may still notice a view from an account they do not recognise; Is GazeStory safe to use? explains where it comes from. The other ways people try to watch stories unseen are compared in How to view Instagram stories anonymously.

Apps that claim to show who screenshotted: do they work?

Apps that promise to reveal who took a screenshot of your story have nothing to work with. Without Instagram Plus, Instagram shows no screenshot notice for stories, posts, reels or profiles, so there is no notice for a third-party app to pass on. The only screenshot notices that exist without Plus go to the sender of a disappearing chat message.

An app making that promise is therefore either guessing or showing something else under a new label. If it also asks you to log in with your Instagram details, it puts your account at risk as well.

Questions people also ask

Does Instagram tell me who screenshotted my story?

No. Without Instagram Plus, Instagram does not tell you who took a screenshot or a screen recording of your story (checked 24 September 2026). Reddit posts from 2026 disagree on whether Instagram Plus adds such a notice.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a DM 2026?

Only for disappearing messages. A screenshot of an ordinary chat notifies nobody. One of a view-once or replayable photo or video, or of a vanish-mode message, is shown to the sender.

Can I screenshot an Instagram post without notifying?

Yes. A screenshot of a post, a carousel, a reel or a profile page is not reported to anyone. A reel’s owner sees a view count, not names.

Is there an app to see who screenshots your Instagram story?

No. Without Instagram Plus, Instagram gives no screenshot notice for stories (checked 24 September 2026), so there is nothing for an app to show. An app that claims otherwise, especially one that wants your login, is best avoided.

Does screen recording a story notify the poster?

No. Recording a story with the phone’s screen recorder did not notify the poster (checked 24 September 2026, without Instagram Plus). The view itself still appears on the viewer list if you watch while signed in.
