How to view Instagram stories anonymously

Published · Jennifer Skinner

Seven ways people try, side by side

People who want to watch Instagram stories anonymously are really asking one question: does their own account take part in the view? Each story view is logged under the account that opened it, and the poster sees that account on the viewer list for 24 hours from posting. Instagram’s help page Who can tell that you’ve seen their Instagram story says the same: when you see someone’s story, they can tell. How long a name stays on the list is covered in Can you see who viewed your Instagram story?, and highlights follow the same clock, as Can you see who views your Instagram highlights? sets out. Everything this page says about how Instagram behaves was checked on 24 September 2026 in the Instagram apps for iOS and Android, on personal accounts, without Instagram Plus, unless a line says otherwise.

Only one method keeps your account out of the view. Of the rest, three leave your name or another account’s name on the list, one gives you almost nothing to watch, one is reported but untested, and one is reported to put your account at risk. The sections below cover the ones that need more than a line.

Do airplane mode and the other in-app tricks work?

The idea behind airplane mode is to watch a story while the phone is offline, so the view never reaches Instagram. It does not hide the view. On the accounts checked for this page, the view was recorded once the phone reconnected, and the viewer’s name was on the list as usual. Threads on Reddit from 2025 describe the same cycle of airplane mode, force-quitting and hoping, and replies there say the view is counted anyway. In the check for this page, it was.

Blocking the poster straight after watching fails the same way. The view stays on the list after the block (checked 24 September 2026), and the block itself is something the other person may notice.

The half-swipe, peeking at the next story by dragging partway from the previous one, avoids the list but shows almost nothing. It shows the first frame of the first story and registers no view (checked 24 September 2026). Reports, some from 2019, say it works only between accounts you follow and not on videos.

The paid preview people mention

Instagram Plus, a paid subscription, was reported in May 2026 articles to be in testing. Among the features reported for it is a story preview. Subscribers say that pressing and holding the story ring shows a small version of the story, about a quarter of the screen, without opening it. Some say the poster is not shown that view; whether that holds has not been confirmed.

Instagram Plus was not offered on the accounts checked for this page, so the preview could not be tried, and reports differ on how much it shows and to whom. Even as described, it is a thumbnail that needs a paid subscription, and nothing suggests it is fully anonymous. Anything beyond that is untried here.

A second account: what it solves and what it does not

A spare account is a common suggestion in threads on the subject, and it does keep your main account’s name off the list. A name still goes on the list, though, because the second account appears there instead, and on a public account every signed-in viewer is listed, followers or not.

The weak point is what happens around the view. Searching for someone or visiting their profile can put the searching account into that person’s suggestions; more in Does Instagram show who views your profile? A new account with no posts that appears in someone’s suggestions is easy to read. One person on Reddit described this in September 2026: a fresh account they thought could not be traced was suggested to the person they had looked up.

Why a web viewer keeps your account out of it

A web viewer fetches the public stories of an account and plays them in the browser, without your Instagram login, so no account of yours opens them. GazeStory works this way. Your account is not used, and the page offers no liking, commenting or replying, so a stray tap does no harm. To open a public story without signing in, paste the username into the box on the homepage.

Two limits come with it. The poster may still see a view from an account they do not recognise, which Is GazeStory safe to use? explains. Even then, the view is not made from your account. And the route works only for public accounts, and only for stories still inside their 24 hours or kept in highlights.

The slips that undo all of it

A small slip around the method can give you away as easily as the method itself:

  • A link that opens the app. On a phone with Instagram installed, a link to a story on instagram.com can open the app itself, signed in, and if it does, the view counts as an ordinary one. Check where a link opens before tapping it.
  • Looking them up first. Looking someone up, or visiting their profile, can put your account into their suggestions, whatever you do about the story itself.
  • A like by mistake. A heart tapped while scrolling through someone’s older posts puts your account’s name on that post.
  • A screenshot. Capturing a story does not notify the poster, but it is a separate question from the view, which is recorded anyway if you watched signed in; Does Instagram notify when you screenshot? goes through each case.

What no method reaches

Some stories stay out of reach whatever you try. A private account’s stories open only for followers the owner has approved, and no viewer, this one included, changes that. Stories shared only with a close friends list are not shown here either. A story that has passed its 24 hours is gone from the profile; it comes back only if the owner pins it to a highlight. And modified versions of the Instagram app, which some people install for extra features, are reported, in threads going back to 2019, to get accounts disabled.

Questions people also ask

Can I view an Instagram story without the person knowing?

To watch the whole story, only if no account of yours opens it. A view is recorded against the signed-in account that watches, so in the app your name is listed. A web viewer on a public account keeps your account out, though the poster may still see a view from an account they do not recognise.

Does the airplane mode trick work on Instagram?

No. The view is recorded when the phone reconnects, and your name appears on the viewer list as usual.

Can I hide that I viewed an Instagram story?

Not after the fact. Once a signed-in account has opened a story, the view stays on its list for the 24 hours, and blocking the poster afterwards does not remove it (checked 24 September 2026).

Can someone see you viewed their Instagram story on airplane mode?

Yes. Airplane mode only delays the view: it is counted and shown on the list once the phone is back online (checked 24 September 2026).

How to view someone’s Instagram story without it showing airplane mode?

There is no in-app way: airplane mode hides nothing, and the view appears once you reconnect. Watching a public account’s story through a web viewer, with no account of yours signed in, is the route that leaves your name out.

Can I watch an IG story without them knowing?

Not from a second account either: that account’s name goes on the list, and a search or profile visit can put it in their suggestions (checked 24 September 2026). Only a route that uses no account of yours lets you watch the story with no name added.
